How Important Is It For Christians To Vote? By: Wanda L. Ball
This 2008 election year will be known as the most historical of our time. We have our first African-American candidate running for President, which indicates Americans may well be ready for change. In fact, this election has us excited about voting more than ever. And it even has our young, usually unmotivated, voters ready to play a part in this election as well. Some of us may or may not have agreed with President George Bush's policies by the end of this term, but America's choice determined the outcome. And that choice counts! Some of us may also believe that our votes don't matter, but in fact it does a great deal. God gave us the will of choice and voting is a very important part of that choice.
But how important is it for Christians to vote? It is the duty and responsibility of every Christian to vote and to vote for leaders who promote Christian principles. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 says, "We are commanded to pray for our leaders." God is ultimately in control, but that doesn't mean we should sit back, doing nothing to further his will. So much of America's suffering has come from leaders not being led by God or his will. And the state of affairs today, symbolize this. As Christians, we should try to choose leaders who will be led by God (1 Samuel 12:13-25). And leaders who violate the bible in regards to family, marriage or faith should never be supported.
In other countries, people are killed or persecuted for their political views. They suffer under dictatorships and governments that silence their voices. If they preach the Gospel of Christ their lives are in danger. But in the U.S., Christians have been blessed to speak up and vote for our leaders. There are leaders who want to exclude God in everything we do. They want to legalize same sex marriage and not uphold God's law of traditional marriage between a man and woman. Even though abortion is legal and ultimately our choice, God doesn't approve, because according to Him, "He knew us before we were in our Mother's womb." Voting is an opportunity to promote, protect and preserve Godly government. The leaders we elect can lead our nation towards righteousness or towards disaster. Get out and vote. But before you do.... Pray.
