On March 1, 2000 President Clinton proclaimed the month of March as Women’s History Month. This was done to remember the many contributions women have made to make our nation strong. Eve was the first woman God created from Adam’s rib. Genesis 2:18-20 tells us that Eve was given to Adam for the purpose of being his helper and to bear children. And Eve was also the first to become deceived by eating the forbidden fruit that was presented to her by Satan. This deceit beget sin entering the world, resulting in death and separation from God. (Genesis 3:1-24) Since the beginning of time, women have had this bad reputation of leading men down the wrong path. We have a great ability to persuade our partners into doing things that we want them to do – good or bad. On our jobs, more and more women are becoming leaders of major companies and corporations and some have even run for President. We have fought our way through time to fight in wars, to vote, to earn the same wages and to live without a man taking care of us. We fought to have control over our bodies through pregnancy and to become leaders in our churches. We have also asked for equal rights, to be recognized in same sex marriages and for our environmental contributions in society. Some of us are also strong Christian women who believe that Jesus Christ is Lord. Many of these roles are great, but what does the bible say regarding the role of a women in today’s society?
As stated before, woman was given to man for the purpose of being her husband’s helper and to bear children. God declares equality of worth in that all people, men and women, are created in God’s image and likeness. But this does not mean that our roles are equal. Women are better at nurturing and taking care of their families. And men are supposed to be better at providing and protecting the family. 1 Corinthians 11:3 also says, “Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” Ruth was a great woman of noble character. After her husband died, her mother-in-law, Naomi, told her to try and find another husband. A man named Boaz, was thought to be the next man in her husbands family that she could marry. When she approached Boaz, he was so impressed with her, because she didn’t leave her mother-in-law after her husbands death. And she didn’t want a young, wealthy man. Because of this, he gave her a present of grain to give back to her mother-in-law. After Boaz found out that another relative, who actually had more claim to her, couldn’t buy her land and marry her, he married her and the Lord blessed their union. (Ruth 3:1-18) The book of Ruth gives women a great example of having great character and defines what God approves of us as well.
Concerning women in church ministry. Women are known as great teachers. And God has given some of us gifts in speaking, teaching, singing, writing, ministering, etc. We are to use our gifts to introduce non-believers to God in order for them to be saved. 1 Timothy 2:11-15 clearly tells us what role the woman plays in church. “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through child-bearing – if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.” This scripture in no way says that women are incompetent or unable to be teachers, but God doesn’t approve of women being over men and the church. God is the church head, and man was created to have women as helpers in the ministry. Also in 1 Timothy, Paul asks “women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.” (1 Timothy 2:9-10)
Women who become wives and have a family are blessed. In this world today, it may be hard to find that perfect person, because society and Satan rules over this world. There are good Christian men in this world and if you pray, believe, and wait on God to bring you a husband, he will do so. If you are blessed with a husband and want to have a successful marriage, God gives us a perfect description of what a “good woman/wife’s” role is. Proverbs 31:10-31 says, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
These examples from the bible have defined some of the roles of women in our society. Women have contributed greatly to God’s plan in making this society strong. We may not be perfect or have done everything right, but we are God’s women! We should be obedient to God’s word and His will in our lives. And by doing so, we will continue to be used as strong servants of God, today and for years to come.
One Flaw In Women
Women have strengths that amaze men…..
They bear hardships and they carry burdens,
but they hold happiness, love and joy.
They smile when they want to scream.
They sing when they want to cry.
They cry when they are happy
and laugh when they are nervous.
They fight for what they believe in..
They stand up to injustice.
They don’t take “no” for an answer
when they believe there is a better solution.
They go without so their family can have.
They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.
They love unconditionally.
They cry when their children excel
and cheer when their friends get awards.
They are happy when they hear about
a birth or a wedding.
Their hearts break when a friend dies.
They grieve at the loss of a family member,
yet they are strong when they
think there is no strength left.
They know that a hug and a kiss
can heal a broken heart.
Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.
They’ll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you
to show how much they care about you.
The heart of a woman is what
makes the world keep turning.
They bring joy, hope and love.
They have compassion and ideas.
They give moral support to their
family and friends.
Women have vital things to say
and everything to give.
HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN…IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH. – Unknown
