How should Christians really
view prayer in school?

September is back to school month. And if your child goes to public and some private schools,
prayer in school is a sore and sensitive subject and a problem all together. As Christians, we've
had the debate over and over as to whether prayer should or shouldn't be allowed in our schools.
And for now, the world has won. Although our country was founded on biblical principles, the US is
currently not a Christian nation. But one positive blessing of this country is our government allows
freedom of expression and religion, which many countries do not. Because of this freedom, we
have to realize that if we allow prayer in school, we have to also allow other prayers also, not just
Christian. This is an issue to think about as we develop our opinions on this issue.

But how should Christians view prayer in school? Romans 13 says, "we are to submit to and pray
for all authority." An application of this would be to pray that we as a culture return to our Christian
heritage through revival and salvation of our country. Christian kids should pray while in school for
their peers and their teachers. Or Christian parents can send their kids to private Christian
schools. The most important thing we as Christians shouldn't do is to look to our government to
reinforce our values and beliefs. We should proclaim the gospel to those who are lost in all places
and if that includes public schools, so be it.
