Why have we forgotten God?
By: Wanda L. Ball

March 20th is the first day of spring. Spring is seen as a time of growth and renewal of life, and the
cycle of life once again starting.  And in some cases, it can be a symbol of the start of better times.
We as a nation and even the world, are going through tough times.  We all know we are in an
economic crisis.  And because of this crisis, we have seen people at their worst.  From losing
everything they worked for, to killing themselves and their families. Spring is seen as a time of
growth and renewal of life, and the cycle of life once again starting.   When this nation was
founded, it was founded on Christian values and principles.  The early settlers left England, to
practice their religious Christian freedoms here in America.  We turned to God for everything.

So why have we forgotten God?  Within the last decade, our nation was on top of the world.  We
had homes (some of us couldn't afford), great jobs (that stressed us out), fast and expensive cars
and money in the bank.  We didn't need God.  Right?  Wrong.  God has a way to show the worst in
us.  He allows us to have the desires of our hearts.  But once we get them, we don't give Him the
praise he deserves.  God is a jealous God and he doesn't want us worshipping things and
possessions instead of Him.  For Exodus 34:14 says,
"Do not worship any other god, for the Lord
whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."
God considers our worldly possessions as idols or gods
that we worship.  Because we put all of our time and energy obtaining these things, instead of
seeking God and His kingdom first.

In order to get right with God, we must tear down our old lives and renew our relationship with
him.
Judges 6:25-26 says, "That same night the Lord said to him, "Take the second bull from your
father's herd, the one seven years old.  Tear down your father's altar to Baal and cut down the Asherah
pole beside it.  Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height.  Using the
wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering."
 If we are
obedient to him and His word our lives and spirits will be renewed and our lives will become new
again.  For Ezekiel 36:26-27 says,
"I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of
flesh.  And I will put my spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws."

We as Christians should never forget who God is.  When we accepted Christ into our lives, we
made a commitment to follow Him and not the world.  Even though we are dealing with hard times,
God promised never to leave us or forsake us.  If you were one of the people to suffer a loss,
maybe it was for the best, because it took your attention away from God.  God wants our undivided
attention, constant communication and close relationship through prayer.  The Lord is angry with
us, because we have moved away from Him, just as he was angry with the Israelites in Canaan.
But if we repent and ask God for forgiveness, His grace and mercy will allow us to get back on the
right track.  For Deuteronomy 4:29-31 says,
"But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will
find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.  When you are in distress and all
these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the Lord your God and obey
him.  For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant
with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath."
Just remember this scripture at all times.
And by doing so, God will always be remembered in your heart.
